Definition of Group Discussion
Group Discussion (GD) is a group of people with similar interest gathered to bring up ideas, solve problems or discuss a topic. It may be in person or via conference call. Firstly, GD begins with the announcement of the topic, which is followed by preparation time
Types of Group Discussion:-
1. Topical Group D
Generally based on current affairs or static topics.
2. Case study Group Discussion-
Analyze a Business situation, identify the problem and finally suggest a solution for it.
3. Abstract Group Discussion-
To interpret the topic and bring out innovative thinking.
Group discussion is evaluated in the following ways,
i. Listening skill:
The panel observes that whether all the participants of your group are listening to the discussion or not. In Group Discussion, many think that after speaking, their job is done, which is totally wrong. If there is a lack of eye contact then panelist may infer as a poor listener.
ii. Body language:
Firstly, the panels look at eye contact and hands movement. If either of it lacks, then you allow a panelist to interfere. In Group Discussion, the pitch you make makes a big impact. Just leave your hands alone and focus on the topic and your hands will move naturally.
The content which you speak must be relevant and you mustn’t go out of the topic. In Group Discussion, if the content is very much relevant to the topic, then the examiner will be keen to listen to you.
iv. Communication skills:
In Group Discussion, use simple language and also the language in which the panelist can understand better, and be relevant to the topic. If you get stuck, then move on to other part and it must be one in a way that you go unnoticed by the panelist.
v. Reasoning skill:
The panelist observes that how you support your points and how strong your argument is. Based on it observes your skills. In Group Discussion, do think logically and put some logical points to support your arguments
In Group Discussion, do look at the topic in a different way and unique way and bring some creativity in the topic such a way that even the panelist will be amazed and will consider you a person with one of the rarest qualities.
vii. Group behavior:
In Group Discussion, the panelist observes the behavior of your group, like whether are all paying attention or not and also are all speaking or only a few and their body language. Is someone aggressive or not. Based on these they evaluate your group behavior.

Advantages of Group Discussion
Provide more information and knowledge: GD gives you extra information which you may not be aware of and give you some extra knowledge.
Variety of views: GD brings out each person point of view and helps each person to bring out their view.
Encourages people to participate: GD helps people to engage and equally participate in the Discussion.
Bring out unique ideas: GD helps people to bring out their unique ideas, and also help others to learn something new.
Provides an opportunity to present their views: GD provides an opportunity to each person to present their views.
Helps in building greater understanding: GD helps in building greater understanding between the people of the Group
Team building: Gd helps in building a team who can rely on each other.
Increases collaboration and allows brainstorming: GD allows brainstorming, which results bringing out different solution of the problem and also new ideas
More reliable: GD helps in building co-operation between people and also reliability.
Disadvantages of Group Discussion
Slow at making Decisions: The decisions in GD are taken very slowly and which results in the consumption of time as of the above point.
Sometimes some people may stay silent: In GD, some people may stay silents and may not participate in Discussion much
Conflicts within the Team: In GD, sometimes there might be a argument between 2 persons while taking a decision, which results in conflict between them.
Groupism: In GD, within a Group, another Group may be formed, that results in Groupism.
No responsibility for failure: Sometimes, if the decision is taken wrongly or if the point isn’t strong to support your argument. Then none takes the responsibility of its failure.
So, to perform better in a Group Discussion you will need some guidelines/tips. So, here are some tips which you will need to follow while GD and which may bring success.
Follow these Group Discussion tips
- Try to start the Discussion, even if you don’t have much knowledge about the topic.
- Listen to each and every person in your group and write their views on a paper and use it whenever required.
- Keep writing all the points you get and never stop.
- In the end, try to list all the points that you and others spoke.
- Use verbal communication.
- Use hands gestures.
- Let everyone participate in the discussion and bring out their ideas.
- Keep calm.
- Be specific, clear and have a positive attitude.
- Be confident.
A GD helps to achieve not only Group goals, but also Individual goals. It is a very useful tool to screen the candidate’s potential as well as their skills.
